Join me, Ronnie Shellist, as we go through this classic 1st position song from the late great Big Walter Horton.
“Hard Hearted Woman” is simply one of the best classic blues harp songs period and it happens to be in 1st position played on an A harmonica.
The version of the song that we will learn is the original that Walter cut back in ’54 with his band Big Walter and his Combo on States Record Company. I’ve hyperlinked the version above so you can click on the title and have a listen to it. Big Walter uses a nice mix of low end and just enough of high end 1st position to give us something to chew on down below and up above. Mostly, the ideas will come from the bottom register which is great because most players are not as sure how to handle the low end of 1st position blues.
We will also discuss hand cupping technique, rare vibratos and some basic approaches to improvising in 1st position blues and beyond.
